It’s confession time.

I haven't got the first clue how to plot out a book. I never learned how.

I know there MUST be conflict, and a hero/heroine, and a bad guy type, but I don't know how to set up that guide rope that keeps me from tumbling off the edge of the cliff and wandering off into nowheresville. I don't know how to outline the plot. And so I sit, with characters standing by inside my head. Oh, I can write excerpts but I don't know how to string them together because I don't have a plot outline.

Hi, RJ. Jan here.

This is the one I wanted to comment upon - plotting. I don't plot, either. I'm a 'pantser' - at least I have been. It was great fun to have a concept and see what flew out of my fingers. In our two collaborative writing mss, it's been even more fun because the challenge was to surprise each other.

Having said that, I am going to try plotting more in my next project. Do I know how? Not really. But I've been studying a few methods. One book I picked up early on is The Marshall Plan for Novel Writing by Evan Marshall. I can highly recommend it. Part 2 is Your Complete Guide to Plotting. The rest of the book is excellent as well.

Another one I picked up with good info about the industry is: How to Wrtie and Sell Your First Novel by Oscar Collier.

cheers,
Jan
